  1. Nice machining 4 Star Review

This is a very well machined barrel. The only reason I gave it a four star is it does not have the Winchester style rifling.

  2. Barrel used on Rolling Block 5 Star Review

Posted by on 19th Dec 2017

I use this barrel on # 1 or 1 1/2 Remington Rolling Block rifle for off hand shooting. SASS Cody/Dixon single shot rifle. This combo works well, and is not to heavy. Range I shoot is between 70-130 yards. I used Pyrodex powder with Hoch bullet mould # 430. I have two rifle setup with this combo. (1:18 or 1:20) Both rifle have 26" barrels. Hope this helps.

  4. Just a small addition to my previous review 5 Star Review

Posted by on 31st May 2016

The rifle continues to shoot well, so I decided to go ahead and run the barrel through the hot tanks.
I thought those who have access to hot tanks would like to know that this steel blues like a Colt Python.
You know how some barrels come up out of the tanks with a grey wash that has to be scrubbed off with paper towels? None of that here. The barrel came up looking like a black mirror. Took the salts like a duck takes to water.
I am thouroughly impressed with this product and I hope Green Mountain continues to sell these barrels to people who really need something of this quality.

    Thank you Green Mountain!!!!

  5. Superb barrel. 5 Star Review

Posted by on 24th May 2016

I bought this barrel and installed it on my favorite rifle: Browning 1886 1-3000 limited edition. I did everything I could to get the original barrel to shoot well with cast bullets (never tried jacketed) to no avail. Green Mountain has impressed me for years with the quality of their products, so I decided to go all in and buy this barrel.
I cut the threads so that the radius where the flats end was still visible which only removed about 3/8" from the rear of the barrel. I chambered it with Manson's standard 45-70 reamer (huge improvement over other peoples idea of what a match chamber is supposed to look like) and I bobbed the end of this barrel 1", leaving me with nearly the full 27" length.
The forend was bedded securely to the barrel, and I used a special tensioning magazine tube as well as a special band that ties the forend to the barrel. this brought the harmonics into a repeatable place.

I installed a Lyman #17 front sight and used a Lee/Shaver cross hair insert.

The first bullet I tried was a copy of the original Ranch Dog 350 grain bullet from Accurate molds, complete with Hornady Gas check. Accuracy was about 4" for ten shots, but this was not unexpected as that bullet is too short with too big a meplat on it to stabilize at 100 yards.
The next outing, I tried a 500 grain Rapine bullet design and the Lee 405HB bullet, both cast of 95/2.5/2.5 alloy air cooled and lubed with White Label 45/45/10 tumble lube.
The 500 Rapine went into 2" for ten shots, and the Lee 405HB did 1.5", 8 of which went into ONE RAGGED HOLE.

Unfortunately, the tumble lube was not enough to take care of this long barrel, so I got horrible leading. Fortunately, Green Mountain is selling a barrel here with superb internal finish, so the lead was easily removed with steel wool wrapped around a used brush and soaked with Kroil. A few scrubbing passes, and a couple patches cleared the barrel thoroughly of all traces of leading.

All things considered, based on the superb internal finish I see with my Hawkeye Borescope, the quality of the metal I observed as I was cutting, and the accuracy demonstrated on paper with ten shot groups, I feel very confident in giving this barrel an excellent stamp of approval.

One little side note: The barrel came with a flame blued finish (I assume it was left over from the stress relieving process) which means if you are considering this barrel but do not have access to bluing tanks, it looks pretty darn good as-is if you want to just put it together and let the rough edge drag.

    Thank you.
